Pune Onion — Kharif & Late-Kharif Red

Pune onion for the months Nashik stock runs out.

From November to March the fresh crop comes from the Pune belt — Junnar, Ambegaon, Khed and Shirur, traded at Manchar and Chakan — while stored Nashik rabi onion is at its thinnest and dearest. AL NOOR EXIM buys Pune onion in season and ships it from Nhava Sheva, so a Gulf or Sri Lanka buyer gets one supplier for the whole year: Nashik red onion April to October, Pune onion November to March, and one daily price page for both.

Pune vs Nashik

Same red onion, different month, different job.

Buyers ask which is better. The honest answer is that they are bought for different weeks of the year.

Nov–Mar
Pune Onion — Fresh Kharif

Harvested and shipped within days. Thinner skin, higher moisture, milder bite, 3–4 week shelf life. Usually cheaper than stored rabi onion in the same week. Right for quick-turn wholesale and retail bagging in the Gulf and Sri Lanka.

Apr–Oct
Nashik Onion — Stored Rabi

Harvested March to May, cured hard and stored in chawls. Firmer, more pungent, 45–60 day shelf life. The onion that travels furthest and holds on the shelf longest. Full Nashik spec →

Why Pune

Maharashtra's second onion belt, and the one closest to the port.

Pune district sits behind only Nashik in Maharashtra onion output, and its kharif crop lands exactly when the market needs fresh supply.

4 talukas
Junnar · Ambegaon · Khed · Shirur

The red onion belt north of Pune city, with Manchar APMC and the Chakan yard as the trading points. Neighbouring Shrigonda and Parner (Ahilyanagar) feed the same markets.

Roughly a four-hour truck run down the Pune–Mumbai expressway. Short inland leg, less handling, and a reefer that is stuffed within a day of grading.

Nov onward
Counter-Season To Nashik Storage

Kharif Pune onion arrives as stored Nashik rabi runs down and its price peaks. In 2026 the Pune crop is running about two months late after an uneven monsoon, so the season starts late and runs into the new year.

Packing Options

Packed dry, graded to your band, loaded cold.

Ventilated mesh in the weight your buyer receives in. Kharif onion has less skin than rabi, so we grade tighter and load faster.

20 / 25 kgWholesale Mesh
50 kgJute (on request)
~28 MTPer 40ft Reefer

Ship it the week it is packed

Kharif onion is a fresh vegetable, not a stored one. We pack against a confirmed vessel, stuff the reefer within 24 hours of grading and set it at 0–4 °C with vents open. On a 4–7 day Gulf lane or a 3–4 day Colombo lane that leaves the buyer two to three weeks of shelf life on arrival.

Marking & documentation

Bags marked with grade, net weight, crop (kharif / late kharif), packing date and origin. Phytosanitary certificate and certificate of origin issued against the packed lot, so customs and your quality team read the same batch.

Frequently Asked

Common questions from Pune onion buyers.

Straight answers on season, quality, grades and price.

What is Pune onion?

Pune onion is the red onion grown in Pune district, Maharashtra — mainly Junnar, Ambegaon, Khed and Shirur talukas — and traded at Manchar APMC, Chakan and the Pune Market Yard. Most of it is kharif and late-kharif crop harvested November to March, sold fresh rather than stored.

Pune onion vs Nashik onion — which is better for export?

Neither is better; they serve different months. Nashik rabi onion (harvested March–May, stored) is firmer, more pungent and keeps 45–60 days, so it is the export onion from April to October. Pune kharif onion is fresh, milder, thinner-skinned and keeps 3–4 weeks, and it is what is actually available and cheaper from November to March when Nashik stock is low. AL NOOR EXIM supplies both — see the Nashik red onion page.

When is Pune onion available?

Kharif harvest normally begins in October–November and late-kharif (rangda) runs January to March. In 2026 the Pune crop is about two months late because of an uneven monsoon, so meaningful export volumes are expected from December, running into the new year. Rabi Pune onion is available April to May on request.

What is the Pune onion price today?

Pune Market Yard wholesale was ₹1,000–5,000 per quintal with a modal ₹3,000 (₹30 per kg) on 8 September 2026 for mixed local lots; export-grade material trades near the top of the range. In season we publish our export-grade Pune buying rate alongside Nashik on the onion price today page, with CIF per tonne and per 40ft container by destination.

What size grades are available in Pune onion?

25–35 mm, 35–45 mm, 45–55 mm and 55 mm+. Kharif lots run smaller on average than stored rabi, so 45 mm+ is the practical Gulf grade and 55 mm+ is limited early in the season. Tell us the band and the tolerance you can accept.

How long does Pune onion keep after arrival?

Plan on 3–4 weeks from packing for kharif onion and up to 3–4 months for late-kharif Bhima Red types. On a 4–7 day Gulf transit that leaves two to three weeks at destination in ventilated storage. Do not hold kharif onion for weeks in a closed warehouse.

How much is a 40ft container of Pune onion?

A 40ft reefer takes about 28 tonnes in 25 kg mesh bags. The cost is the Pune buying rate plus grading, packing, the ~150 km run to Nhava Sheva and port charges for FOB, plus reefer freight and insurance for CIF. The daily price page shows the arithmetic per tonne and per container; WhatsApp +91 94267 46464 for a firm 40ft quote, valid 72 hours.

Which port do you load Pune onion from?

JNPT, Nhava Sheva (Mumbai) only — about 150 km from Manchar by the Pune–Mumbai expressway, roughly four hours by truck. Gulf cargo is routed to Fujairah, Khor Fakkan, Sohar and Salalah, outside the Strait of Hormuz; Colombo is 3–4 days.
