JNPT to UAE onion shipping: check the route, not just the advertised transit

Is your container booked for Khor Fakkan, Fujairah or Jebel Ali? Recent Maersk notices describe congestion at Khor Fakkan and different arrangements for selected Jebel Ali-bound cargo. The actual port, transfer leg and delivery date matter more to an onion buyer than a headline sailing estimate.

What has Maersk confirmed about Khor Fakkan?

In its 8 October 2026 Middle East operational update, Maersk reported vessel congestion, limited berthing, high yard utilisation, road congestion and truck waiting times at Khor Fakkan. It said these conditions could delay cargo clearance and affect bonded transport to other UAE destinations.

Maersk also said the final destination for selected shipments booked to Khor Fakkan might change to Jebel Ali. The options described were discharge at Fujairah followed by bonded land transport, or direct discharge at Jebel Ali where a feeder could make the passage. This is a shipment-specific contingency, not proof that every JNPT–UAE booking now uses a direct Jebel Ali sailing.

Why can a 10-day sailing become a much longer delivery?

An indicative ocean transit is not the same as the time until an importer can collect onions. A route via Salalah and Khor Fakkan can involve a connection, discharge queue, terminal handling, customs release and possibly a UAE inland transfer. Each stage can move the available-for-collection date.

AL NOOR EXIM's export desk reports that some earlier UAE onion movements were discussed against a roughly 10-day sailing expectation, while total elapsed time in individual cases was reported at about 15, 25, 35 or even 40 days. Those are experience-based examples supplied by our team, not audited Maersk service statistics or a prediction for a future container. Without the booking and milestone records, we cannot assign every extra day to Khor Fakkan congestion.

Ask which clock the quote uses: vessel departure to port arrival, port arrival to cargo release, or cargo-ready date to buyer collection. Record all three separately.

Has Maersk discontinued JNPT–UAE service or started a new direct Jebel Ali service?

We have not found a public Maersk notice confirming a blanket cancellation of JNPT–UAE service or a universal new direct JNPT–Jebel Ali service. Maersk's published update confirms selected Jebel Ali arrangements and warns that routing, availability and charges can change. Its 13 October market update likewise advises customers to confirm current routes and capacity with their Maersk representative.

If a forwarder offers your shipment as “direct to Jebel Ali”, ask for the named vessel and voyage, the booking confirmation, any feeder leg and the final port shown on the bill of lading. A direct discharge option for one shipment should not be confused with a published weekly service for all cargo.

Six questions before booking a reefer onion container from Nhava Sheva

  1. Which port is written on the booking? Distinguish Khor Fakkan, Fujairah and Jebel Ali from the buyer's final warehouse address.
  2. Is there a transshipment or landbridge? Ask for the connecting port and who pays for inland movement.
  3. What is the latest cargo-acceptance position? Confirm reefer equipment, food-cargo acceptance, vessel space and cut-off for this shipment.
  4. Which dates are estimates? Request departure, port-arrival, cargo-availability and expected collection milestones; none is a guaranteed delivery date.
  5. What can change the landed cost? Check freight validity, rerouting, storage, handling, customs and truck charges against the named Incoterm.
  6. How will the onions be protected? Agree grade, packing, pre-shipment inspection and container settings suitable for the confirmed route and transit.
