Onion Supplier to Kuwait — CIF Shuwaikh

Kuwait is where 30 of our 33 containers went.

We are not claiming Kuwait as a target market. It is the market we already ship to, and the customs record says so. Indian red onion from Nashik, graded to your band. Routing to Kuwait is currently transhipped outside the Strait of Hormuz — we quote the lane the way it actually runs today, not the way it used to.

The lane

How the Kuwait lane runs right now.

There is no reliable direct sailing from Nhava Sheva into Shuwaikh at the moment. Disruption around the Strait of Hormuz has pushed Gulf services to discharge outside the Strait — Fujairah, Khor Fakkan, Sohar and Salalah — so Kuwait cargo is transhipped, and transit and cost move with whatever the feeder schedule is that week. We tell you the real routing at the quote stage rather than publish a number that will not hold.

Load portNhava Sheva (JNPT), Mumbai. Graded, cured and loaded at Nashik.
Discharge portShuwaikh, Kuwait — reached by tranship, since services are discharging outside the Strait of Hormuz.
TransitQuoted per booking. The first leg to Fujairah or Khor Fakkan is 5–7 days; the feeder leg into Shuwaikh depends on the week’s schedule. Ask and we will give you the routing and the days we are actually being offered.

Kuwait documentation

Three certificates travel with the cargo.

Kuwait's requirements for imported fresh produce are specific, and a missing notarisation is what holds a container at the port. We prepare all of this as standard.

01

Phytosanitary certificate

Issued in India, confirming the consignment is free from quarantine pests and conforms to phytosanitary regulations.

02

Certificate of origin

Confirming Indian origin. Kuwait Customs requires this notarised — the step most often missed on a first shipment.

03

Health certificate

Stating the goods were prepared and shipped under sanitary conditions.

The original commercial invoice, bill of lading and packing list travel with them for customs release. Oversight sits with the Public Authority for Agricultural Affairs and the Kuwait Municipality Health Department. If your clearing agent needs anything beyond this list, tell us at the quote stage and it goes in the file.

The market

A little under 1,900 containers a year, country-wide.

Kuwait imported about 53,341 tonnes of fresh onion in 2023, worth roughly $49 million, against 57,991 tonnes in 2022. At 28 tonnes to a 40ft container that is under 1,900 containers for the whole country — a market small enough that quality reputation travels fast, and a bad container is remembered.

Most of the wholesale trade moves through the Al Forda Central Fruits & Vegetable Market in Kuwait City. If you are buying for a stand there, for a supermarket chain, or for catering, the grade and pack differ — say which and we will spec it rather than send a default.

Questions Kuwaiti buyers ask

Straight answers on the Shuwaikh lane.

Who supplies Indian onion to Kuwait?

AL NOOR EXIM is an APEDA-registered Indian onion exporter based in Himmatnagar, Gujarat, with grading and loading at Nashik. Kuwait is our largest market: Indian customs records published by Volza show 30 of our 33 export shipments since 2024 went to Kuwait, of red onion Grade A+ 55 mm+ under HS 0703. We ship from Nhava Sheva (Mumbai). Kuwait cargo is currently transhipped, because services are discharging outside the Strait of Hormuz — ask and we will give you the routing being offered this week.

What is the onion rate for Kuwait today?

Our export-grade buying rate at Nashik today is ₹49–54 per kg. Kuwait CIF is quoted on request rather than published. With no reliable direct sailing into Shuwaikh and Gulf services discharging outside the Strait of Hormuz, the Kuwait leg is transhipped and its cost moves week to week — a published number would be out of date before you read it. For reference, our published CIF to the UAE today is $870 per tonne. Send your grade, quantity and packing and you get a firm Shuwaikh price the same working day, valid 72 hours.

How long does shipping take from India to Kuwait?

It depends on the week, and anyone quoting you a fixed figure right now is guessing. There is no reliable direct sailing from Nhava Sheva into Shuwaikh at the moment: disruption around the Strait of Hormuz has pushed Gulf services to discharge outside the Strait, so Kuwait cargo is transhipped. The first leg to Fujairah or Khor Fakkan runs 5–7 days; the feeder into Shuwaikh depends on that week’s schedule. We give you the actual routing and days at the quote stage. We ship in a 40ft reefer at 0–4 °C, which is what protects the skin over a longer, transhipped leg in Gulf heat.

What documents does Kuwait require for imported onions?

Three certificates travel with the cargo: a phytosanitary certificate confirming the consignment is free from quarantine pests, a certificate of origin (Kuwait Customs requires this notarised), and a health certificate stating the goods were prepared and shipped under sanitary conditions. The original commercial invoice, bill of lading and packing list accompany them for customs release. Oversight sits with the Public Authority for Agricultural Affairs and the Kuwait Municipality Health Department. We prepare all of it as standard — tell us if your clearing agent needs anything additional.

How big is the Kuwait onion market?

Kuwait imported about 53,341 tonnes of fresh onion in 2023, worth roughly $49 million, against 57,991 tonnes in 2022 (Tridge, market data year 2024). Most of the wholesale trade moves through the Al Forda Central Fruits & Vegetable Market in Kuwait City. At 28 tonnes to a 40ft container, the whole country is a little under 1,900 containers a year.

What size grade does the Kuwait market take?

Kuwaiti retail and catering buy mostly 45 mm+ and 55 mm+. Smaller bands, 25–35 mm and 35–45 mm, move to processing and to lower-price retail. Tell us your channel and we will advise the grade rather than guess — sending the wrong band to Kuwait is the most common way a first container disappoints.

What packing do you use for Kuwait?

25 kg PP leno mesh is standard; 5, 10 and 20 kg mesh are available for supermarket programmes, and 50 kg jute where the buyer prefers it. Private-label and multi-colour mesh printed to your brand can be arranged on a repeat programme. One 40ft reefer holds about 28 tonnes.

What are your payment terms?

30% advance to confirm the booking, and the remaining 70% against a copy of the bill of lading. Quoted in USD, CIF Shuwaikh or FOB Nhava Sheva. Terms on repeat shipments can be discussed once we have shipped together.

Can you ship small quantities to Kuwait?

No. Minimum is one 40ft container, about 28 tonnes. We do not ship LCL or part loads. If you want to check quality before committing, ask for a pre-shipment sample and photographs of the graded lot before loading.
